Historic village. Dexter’s side streets lie mostly east of downtown, on a hill that rises from the Huron River and its tributary Mill Creek. There are some small postwar Cape Cods here that often serve as affordable starter homes, as well as larger and newer ranches. Ranches and Cape Cods sell for $150,000 to $250,000. Historic showpieces start at $300,000.

New homes inside the village. Westridge, colonials and ranches on park site within walking distance of downtown and farmers’ market ($230,000–$350,000). Huron Farms, one- and two-story homes across from Mill Creek Middle School ($240,000–$380,000); Dexter Crossings, one- and two-story homes near shopping center and schools ($230,000–$340,000).

Outlying areas. Nearby developments include Bates Farms, colonial-style houses near the high school on one-to-two-acre lots ($350,000–$400,000); Brass Creek, contemporaries and colonials with hilltop views ($350,000–$600,000); Carriage Hills, one-acre country lots ($210,000–$325,000); Castleton Farms, colonial-style homes west of the village on one-acre lots ($295,000–$395,000); Cedar Hills, large homes on acre-plus lots ($500,000–$1 million); Deer Run, ranches and colonials on small and medium-size lots ($265,000–$335,000); Dunlavy Farms, two-acre home sites ($280,000–$370,000); Fischer’s Landing, one-acre luxury homes ($350,000–$550,000); Fox Ridge, luxury homes on wooded lots ($415,000–$650,000); Gregory Farms, colonial-style homes west of the village on one-acre lots ($325,000–$450,000); Harbor Trails, luxury homes on two-to-three-acre wooded lots ($600,000 & up); Hickory Creek, two-acre lots with walking paths and conservation areas ($350,000–$450,000); Hidden Lake, colonials and contemporary homes on medium-size lots next to Hudson Mills Metropark ($280,000–$380,000); Hidden Woods, across from Hudson Mills Metropark, wooded one-to-two-acre lots ($325,000 & up); Huron Creek Farms, minimansions on large lots ($280,000–$380,000); Island Hills, large two-story homes ($250,000–$400,000); Meadow Creek, one-acre lots for medium-size houses ($350,000–$430,000); Mystic Ridge, large homes on cul-de-sac backing up to natural area ($300,000–$350,000); Pineview Dr., variety of one-story structures, dirt roads, some new construction, and many pine trees ($300,000–plus); the Preserve, large--footprint homes on one-to-four-acre lots built around two spring-fed lakes ($500,000–$1.2 million); Quail Ridge, ranches to minimansions on huge lots ($360,000 & up); Ralaric Farms, colonials ($300,000–$375,000); Ridgeview, estate-size, two-acre-plus lots ($475,000–$575,000); Stoneyfield Meadows, on Island Lake Rd. ($295,000–$395,000); Walsh Farms, large homes on rolling lots of several acres ($400,000–$575,000); and Webster Hills, stately homes on one-to-two-acre lots ($425,000 & up).
