Late-nineteenth-century Manchester boasted three flour mills, a sawmill, a paper mill, a woolens factory, a basket factory, and two breweries along the River Raisin. In the twentieth century, centralized industrial production rendered obsolete many of Manchester’s small-scale industries that depended on the river and the railroad. But the legacy of that prosperous age remains today, from the mill on the river to the Victorian mansions around the village green. And the area surrounding the village is slowly growing as more refugees from cities seek the pleasures of country living.
