Saline
Old Indian trails converged on valuable salt springs near the present-day city; in the eighteenth century French explorers named the local river Saline, meaning salty in French. Surveyor Orange Risdon, mapping an overland route from Detroit to Chicago, arrived via the Great Sauk Trail in 1824 and loved the area so much he made his home there and founded the village. The village later became the city of Saline in 1931.
Long a center for local farmers, Saline was drawn into the orbit of the automobile industry in the twentieth century. The Great Sauk Trail became Michigan Avenue. The city today has a strong identity, anchored by a vital downtown. The major cash crop growing in the surrounding farmland is no longer soybeans but housing.
