After skyrocketing population growth between 2000 and 2010, inspiring voters to approve a change to city status in 2014, Dexter has matured. The 2020 census counted 4,500 Dexterites, up from 4,067 ten years earlier, for an increase of 10.6 percent. Some growth spilled over into adjacent townships; Dexter Township to the northwest notched a 10.8 percent increase, from 6,042 to 6,696, as the city became built out. Whether living in historic homes in the city center or in family-oriented commuter subdivisions, Dexter-area residents enjoy one of Michigan's most distinctive townscapes, with one of the state's few central commons, complete with gazebo, and the timeless Greek Revival Gordon Hall surveying new developments as time marches on.
