Saline
Overview
Chelsea · Dexter · Manchester · Saline

Old Indian trails converged on valuable salt springs near present-day Saline. Surveyor Orange Risdon, mapping an overland route from Detroit to Chicago, arrived via the Great Sauk Trail in 1824 and loved the area so much he made his home there and founded the city.

Long a center for local farmers, Saline was drawn into the orbit of the automobile industry in the twentieth century. The Great Sauk Trail became Michigan Avenue. The city today has a strong identity, anchored by a vital downtown. The major cash crop growing in the surrounding farmland is no longer soybeans but housing.
